The Mediterranean region has been identified as a climate change “hotspot,” meaning that Cyprus is expected to experience its effects earlier and more intensely than other parts of Europe. This is deeply concerning; however, a significant portion of our society still does not perceive climate change as a real and serious crisis. As a result, the actions and efforts to address this issue are unfortunately disproportionate to the actual scale of the problem.

Young people are expected to be the most affected by the consequences of the climate crisis compared to other age groups in Cypriot society. Therefore, it is time for the youth of Cyprus to become active citizens and advocate for a safe and prosperous future, free from the devastating impacts of climate change.

With this in mind, Terra Cypria, in collaboration with the Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, participated in the creation of a youth movement from September 2021 until the end of 2023. This movement aimed to raise awareness and encourage policymakers to take stronger climate action.

The movement was named Generation KLIMACT, and Terra Cypria:

  • Provided students with education on climate change topics
  • Informed them about different ways to mobilize and exercise active citizenship
  • Facilitated meetings with politicians to communicate their demands

Participants in the movement were students aged 9-18 from schools across Cyprus who actively took part in all activities and training sessions.

The ultimate goal of the project was to create an informed youth movement capable of taking independent action. Through knowledge and empowerment, it aimed to become self-sustaining and continue raising awareness among other young people in the country.
