Terra Cypria’s Executive Director, Koulla Michael, appeared on the television programmes Apo Mera se Mera (“From Day to Day”) and Mesimeri kai Kati (“Midday and Something”), where she spoke about the current situation at Lady’s Mile Beach in Limassol.
Based on the information publicly presented by our Foundation’s Executive Director:
- Is Lady’s Mile protected by law? YES.
- Is there evidence of systematic violations? YES.
- Is the area under threat? YES.
- Are the Sovereign Base Area Authorities aware of the situation? YES.
- Do they have a legal obligation to enforce the law and protect the area? YES.
- Are they effectively enforcing it? NO.
- Are they providing clear answers? NO.
And perhaps most concerning of all?
Even after the issue received public attention, beach parties continue. According to publicly available announcements, new events are still being scheduled and promoted. Sunbeds and other structures are not being removed between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., as required by law. Floating structures and water sports activities also remain in place. In short, nothing has changed.
The question is no longer whether the competent authorities are aware of the problem. The real question is why they are failing to enforce the law.
This is therefore not only an environmental issue—it is an issue of governance.
When a protected area is under threat, when there are well-documented complaints, and when the competent authorities fail to respond effectively, inaction becomes part of the problem.
We are asking for nothing more—and nothing less—than what should already be guaranteed:
- the enforcement of the law,
- transparency,
- accountability,
- the protection of Lady’s Mile, and
- respect for our island’s natural heritage.
