The Akrotiri Wetland is once again facing serious environmental pressures and threats.
During a field visit on 11 November 2025, Terra Cypria observed significant water inflows of questionable quality, strong odours and signs of eutrophication, clear indications of wastewater entering the wetland. Despite minimal rainfall this season, large quantities of water were found flowing through stormwater channels into the wetland and the sea. Nearby construction works of road network, a golf course and other developments, appear to be discharging drainage water into these channels without proper management and the necessary permits.

The result is ongoing pollution, degradation of habitats and severe disturbance of one of Cyprus’s most important ecosystems. The Akrotiri Wetland is the island’s largest surface water body and a Wetland of International Importance, hosting unique types of natural habitats and wildlife species, highly sensitive to changes in water quality and hydrology.

In this framework, Terra Cypria has submitted a new complaint to the Environmental Authority, documenting the environmental damage caused and calling once again for immediate investigation, transparent water-quality testing, public reporting of the results and the implementation of the Law on Environmental Liability for the Prevention and Restoration of Environmental Damage.

If last year’s situation was critical, this year it is even more urgent.
We cannot afford to lose the island’s most important wetland. Immediate action from all responsible authorities is essential.
