The Environmental Caretakers Project concluded this Sunday with a celebratory final event, marking the end of a year-long effort to empower youth across Cyprus to protect and preserve the island’s natural heritage. Over the past year, the initiative successfully mobilized young Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to act as active stewards of the environment.
Through 13 workshops and co-developed educational training materials, participants learned to identify, document, and report environmental issues ranging from pollution and urban mobility to biodiversity loss and climate change. This work helped establish a growing network of informed and engaged environmental ambassadors while fostering cross-community collaboration and shared ecological awareness.
During the final event, the project also launched the Environmental Caretakers App, a new GIS-enabled reporting platform designed to record environmental issues across Cyprus. The application allows users to report concerns such as wildfires, animal welfare issues, pollution, invasive species, and other environmental threats, thereby improving monitoring and response across the island.
The Environmental Caretakers project is an initiative of the Technical Committee on Environment led by Terra Cypria and Taşkent Nature Park. The project is funded by the European Union and it is implemented by UNDP Cyprus in collaboration with OSASG-Cyprus.
