Participants in our nature walk in the Agios Sozomenos area enjoyed a wonderful experience in nature as part of the Pandoteira (LIFE IP Physis) project.
Before the walk began, two birds from the Game and Fauna Service’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, a Common Kestrel and a Little Owl, were ringed and released. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the bird ringing process and its importance before witnessing the release of both birds back into their natural habitat.
With a great turnout and the beautiful sunset as our backdrop, we explored the area’s unique natural beauty, taking in the landscape and learning more about the wildlife it supports, with particular emphasis on Little Owls and the bat species found in the area.
During the walk, participants learned about the importance of the area as a refuge for various wildlife species, as well as the artificial nesting boxes installed there to increase the availability of suitable nesting sites. They also had the opportunity to learn more about the activities carried out under the Pandoteira project to protect biodiversity and conserve Cyprus’s natural ecosystems.
Located approximately 20 kilometres south of Nicosia, Agios Sozomenos lies at the confluence of the Yialias and Alikos rivers. With its impressive rock formations, rich biodiversity and historic abandoned settlement, it offers a distinctive landscape where nature meets cultural heritage. The area forms part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected sites.
The event was organised by members of the Pandoteira project team from Terra Cypria–the Cyprus Conservation Foundation and BirdLife Cyprus.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and shared this special experience in nature!
