Terra Cypria and the Department of Environment are organising a 2-day celebration for Natura 2000 Day, under the framework of the Pandoteira project. The celebration will take place on May 24th and 25th , 2025 and it will include activities for children and adults. Click here to view the agenda and register.

Saturday May 24th – Educational hike with a twist (Cape Greco)

Join us on this educational hike on an impressive trail at Cape Greco! Along the way, we will encounter unique marine fossils, majestic rock formations, and remarkable biodiversity. This natural fusion, forms the stunning coastline of Cape Greco. During the hike, members of our team will share fascinating insights into the unique flora and fauna of the area, which is part of the Natura 2000 network. The hike will lead us to the top of the trail, where we’ll have the chance to enjoy a breathtaking sunset by the sea, accompanied by the sounds of live, unplugged traditional music.

The hike will begin at 17:30 from this location and it will be completed at 20:30 with our return to the same location.

Trail: Combination of “ Kavos” and “Sea Caves”
Degree of difficulty: 2 (medium). It is not recommended for children under the age of 12.

Sunday May 25th – Thalassa Museum (Ayia Napa)

From 9:30 to 13:00, you will be able to participate in a number of activities, both inside and outside the museum. Click here to view the agenda.

The day’s activities include:

1.Bird ringing (registration required)

Join us for a live bird ringing demonstration, featuring birds that were cared for and rehabilitated at the Game and Fauna Service’s Rehabilitation Centre! Learn about the importance of bird ringing in monitoring bird populations, as well as the efforts made to rehabilitate them.

2.Interactive educational games related to sea life

Through fun educational games, children will explore the secrets of the lives of sea turtles and mediterranean seals. They will learn about the species’ circle of life, their nutrition, as well as the dangers and threats they face in the Mediterranean.

This activity includes games suitable for children from Kindergarten to Middle School.

3.Treasure hunt (registration required)

Rumor has it that a mysterious artifact is hidden somewhere in the museum—one that nobody has managed to find… yet. Follow the clues concealed within the exhibits, solve the riddles scattered throughout the museum, and you just might be the lucky one to uncover the lost relic! If it’s discovered in time, it will be displayed for everyone to see during the museum’s 20th anniversary celebration!
This activity is designed for children aged 8 to 12.

4.Theatre workshop (registration required)

In this theatre-educational program, children will have the chance to become environmental superheroes! They’ll take part in an interactive experience that combines theatre techniques, improvisation, role-playing, and group expression—while exploring important environmental issues such as climate change, pollution, recycling, and the protection of living organisms.

This workshop is designed for children aged 6 to 12.

5.Thalassa Museum guided tour (registration required)

Through the museum’s exhibits, we’ll explore the rich biodiversity of marine ecosystems and the interaction between humans and the aquatic environment—from antiquity to the present day. The museum also features paleontological and archaeological findings, as well as exhibits on maritime history, culture, and art.

A specialized guide will lead us on this journey of discovery, highlighting the importance of the sea throughout the history of our island!

6.Crafting and playing “pithkiavlin”

Discover the art of crafting a traditional Cypriot musical instrument—the pithkiavli (Cyprus flute)— by observing an experienced crafter. No registration is required for this part of the activity.

If you are more hands-on, then join a unique workshop to learn from an experienced pithkiavli player how to play this instrument! You’ll learn the basic playing techniques and get some useful tips on producing the distinctive sounds of this special local instrument. A wonderful opportunity to connect with Cyprus’s rich musical heritage and experience a piece of its musical tradition. Registration is required.

7.Traditional carrot spoon sweet making

Have you ever tried carrot spoon sweet? If not, this is the perfect opportunity to both make and taste it! Carrot spoon sweet belongs to the vast range of traditional spoon sweets and originates from the community of Liopetri. We will have with us a local artisan who will guide us through the process of preparing this delicious treat!

8.Documentary screening

Screening of short documentaries dedicated to the sea and the Natura 2000 areas. The documentaries highlight the beauty and importance of Natura 2000 areas, as well as the conservation actions implemented under the Pandoteira project. The screening will run continuously throughout the event.
The Natura Day celebration is led by Terra Cypria and all activities are offered free of charge, within the framework of the Pandoteira project.
