On November 20th, a crucial visit was implemented at the Parliament, bringing together Members of the Parliamentary Committee of the Environment with members from our project.
Elena Stylianopoulou (Project Manager), Constantinos Kounnamas (Scientific Coordinator), and Koulla Michael (Terra Cypria Director and E.2 Action Responsible) presented the project’s goals, so far achievements, and future plans. The MPs were informed about the Natura 2000 Network, the obligations deriving from the implementation of various Articles of the Directives and the transposed National Laws, and the importance and vulnerability of designated species and habitats within Natura 2000 areas.
The MPs present expressed particular concern regarding the ongoing illegal activities within protected areas and they emphasized the urgent need for stricter enforcement measures.
To ensure long-term environmental stewardship, a second visit will be implemented to target the newly elected MPs after the 2026 parliamentary elections. This initiative will equip future policymakers with the knowledge and tools necessary to continue the momentum of conservation efforts and safeguard Cyprus’s rich biodiversity for generations to come.
