We train climate advocates
Terra Cypria, in collaboration with CAN (Climate Action Network) Europe, is building a group of young people who will take the lead and demand more effective action to combat the global climate crisis.
In the first phase of the Generation KLIMACT programme Terra Cypria officers have visited 8 schools (both public and private, 2 in Limassol, 3 in Nicosia and 4 in Paphos). More than 500 primary and secondary level students have now completed their first round of training and there will be 2 more training sessions with the same students by the end of the academic year together with media appearances to raise awareness with the broader public.
In this first phase of the programme the students learnt about the climate crisis and the problems it is creating both locally and globally. They are also taught how they can become active citizens and demand more action against climate change from the decision makers.
The first phase of the project ended with a peaceful demonstration of students on the 6th of November in Paphos. This peaceful demonstration, which coincided with the COP 26 Climate Conference held in Glasgow from the 31st of October until the 12th of November, allowed the students to express their concerns about the future of the planet, hoping that their voices will be heard by the decision makers. Two MPs, two representatives of MPs and the Mayor of Paphos attended the demonstration.
