The lack of transparency and the minimal interest of the majority of MPs did not help to draw comprehensive conclusions.
In the past few months, with the parliamentary elections approaching, we collaborated with the organisation Oxygono and the Cyprus Bird Association (Birdlife Cyprus) to try to evaluate the contribution of the MPs, and any important developments in the environmental “arena”, during the last five years (2016-2021).
Initially, we requested access to the minutes and attendance records of specific parliamentary committees, dealing with environmental issues, but unfortunately the administration of the House of Representatives refused.
We then sent a short questionnaire to the committee members. The questionnaire was sent to a total of 37 Members and only 7 of them responded.
The answers revealed the multitude of issues that concern these MPs, and the need to improve the transparency of parliamentary work was emphasized.
