On Sunday, October 26th, we celebrated World Reptile Day together with the “Pandoteira” project through a wonderful outing in the Machairas Forest. The activity was organised by our Foundation, the Open University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Herpetological Society.
Meeting at the Kionia picnic site, participants had the opportunity to learn more about Cyprus’ reptiles through hands-on activities and informative stops in the field.
Learning about the reptiles of Cyprus
We began with an introductory presentation on the reptile species found on the island, their unique characteristics, and their importance to local ecosystems. Participants had the chance to observe preserved specimens and discuss key features for correctly identifying different species.
We then moved into the practical part of the day: how to safely and respectfully locate and observe reptiles in nature. Experts demonstrated how reptiles are handled when necessary and how they are safely released back into their natural habitat.
Participants also tried the “rock flipping” technique, always with caution and respect for the environment.
Responding to emergency situations
This was followed by practical guidance on how to respond to unexpected incidents in nature — an essential skill for anyone who enjoys exploring outdoor trails.
Hiking with a view
Part of the group walked a section of the Kionia – Prophet Elias trail, enjoying the scenic view of Machairas while learning about the area’s biodiversity.
A creative ending
For those who preferred a more relaxed activity, the day concluded with a reptile-themed crafts workshop, a fun and creative experience for both children and adults.
This event offered a wonderful opportunity for families, children and nature lovers to get closer to Cyprus’ reptile species and understand their important role in our ecosystems.
