We presented our positions to the Parliamentary Committee of the Environment
On 21.10.2021 we were invited to the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment to discuss the issue of possible environmental problems and the deterioration of the quality of life of residents from the operation of polluting factories. We once again reiterated our firm positions regarding asphalt and concrete production units as well as other heavy industry units.
For many years we have been identifying problems with the location of different types of heavy industry due to the insufficient national Spatial Policy. This has resulted in damage to both public health and the environment, as well as the problematic management of the resources of our island.
The siting of asphalt and concrete production units and other heavy industry units should be carefully and strategically planned. What we are seeing so far are case by case efforts and adjustments that are very likely to transfer the problem from one area to another.
Air pollution and noise pollution pose major risks to the health and well-being of citizens. Advocating for the right of every citizen to live in a clean and healthy environment, we consider it necessary for the state to immediately initiate a strict and integrated spatial policy for the whole island for such developments.
This can be regulated based on a Special Spatial Planning Framework for which a Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment would be carried to make sure that future projects will not be assessed individually and to eliminate the possibility of relocating them in a few years due to proximity to residential and/or commercial areas.
