In the context of the European project “Pandoteira” and in cooperation with the Community Councils of Mitsero and Agrokipia, we organized a hike on the “Kreatis” mountain in Mitsero on 18 February.
Kreatis is an area included in the Natura 2000 Network, which consists of habitats, in which there are 500 types of plants. The participants, who came from all different parts of Cyprus, expressed their interest in the Natura 2000 network, asked about the criteria based on which an area is included in this Network, but also how they can use their land if it’s included in the Natura Network.
Besides of the environmental importance of the area, Kreatis represents an important point in history, considering that it was there one of the last battles of the revolutionary Re Alexis.
At the top of the mountain, the General Secretary of EKA (association of Cypriot farmers), Panikos Hambas, talked a bit about the battle that took place in Mitsero and the actions taken by Re Alexis. Upon our return from the hike, a presentation was given by a member of our Organization explaining in more detail the Natura 2000 Network, followed by a discussion regarding the concerns that the residents of the communities shared.
