The festival took place at Europe Square in Larnaca on 25–26 September 2026, as part of the European Research and Innovation project DesirMED (Demonstration & Mainstreaming of Nature-Based Solutions for Climate-Resilient Transformation in the Mediterranean), with the support of Larnaca Municipality and Larnaca 2030 – European Capital of Culture. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the wider DesirMED project consortium also participated in the event.

On Friday, 25 September 2026, Terra Cypria’s Environmental Policy Officer, Kleitos Papastylianou, participated in a public discussion on the importance of nature-based solutions and resilient coastal planning, as well as the steps required to advance climate adaptation and the adoption of nature-based solutions.

During his intervention, Terra Cypria’s representative highlighted that the Republic of Cyprus has not yet signed, ratified or implemented the Seventh Protocol to the Barcelona Convention, concerning Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the Mediterranean (ICZM Protocol). Consequently, the Republic of Cyprus has not yet aligned its existing legislation with the European Union (EU) environmental acquis or established the necessary legal framework for the integrated management and protection of Cyprus’s coastal zones.

The Protocol on Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the Mediterranean is the Seventh Protocol to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment and the Coastal Region of the Mediterranean. It is the first international legal instrument dedicated to the sustainable management and use of coastal zones, taking due account of the importance of coastal ecosystems, the diversity of activities and land uses, and their impacts on the marine and coastal environment. The Protocol aims to preserve coastal ecosystems, habitats, landscapes and resources.

The Recommendation of the European Parliament and of the Council of 30 May 2002 concerning the implementation of Integrated Coastal Zone Management in Europe (2002/413/EC) calls on EU Member States to develop national strategies for implementing the principles of integrated coastal zone management.

Subsequently, the Protocol was signed by the EU on 4 December 2008, published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 4 February 2009, ratified on 13 September 2010 and entered into force on 24 March 2011.

It is worth noting that all other Mediterranean EU Member States (France, Greece, Spain, Italy, Malta and Slovenia) have already signed and ratified the Protocol. The Republic of Cyprus remains the only Mediterranean EU Member State that has not yet signed or ratified it.

On Saturday, 26 September 2026, Terra Cypria’s Conservation and Projects Officer, Anastasia Aristou, participated in the educational activities organised to celebrate Mediterranean Coast Day, representing the team of the Pandoteira Project: Managing the Natura 2000 Network in Cyprus and Shaping a Sustainable Future.

Terra Cypria participated in the 1st Climate Adaptation Festival, entitled “The Mediterranean We Desire”, co-organised…

[6

post-7057","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news
["GET
