On the occasion of World Wetlands Day on February 3rd, the Pandoteira Project celebrated at Larnaca Salt Lake with children from local schools, offering them an educational and hands-on experience in nature. Our young visitors had the opportunity to learn from experts about the rich history and significance of the Salt Lake, discovering its uniqueness as one of Cyprus\u2019 most important ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were then informed by the Department of Environment about the importance of sand dunes, while with the guidance of the Game and Fauna Service and BirdLife Cyprus, they observed up close the impressive bird species that find refuge in the Salt Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through Terra Cypria\u2019s activities, they explored and learned about the macroinvertebrates of the Salt Lake using stereoscopes, observing in magnification the tiny brine shrimp Artemia, a key component of the lake\u2019s food chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was organized by the Municipality of Larnaca in collaboration with the Pandoteira project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why celebrate World Wetlands Day?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

World Wetlands Day is an opportunity to remember the vital role wetlands play in the environment and human wellbeing. It is also an opportunity to raise public awareness about the need to conserve and sustainably manage wetlands. In addition, it gives us the opportunity to celebrate the beauty and biodiversity of wetlands. Lastly, World Wetlands Day promotes the importance of conserving these unique ecosystems for present and future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
